Mutations in the LMNA gene cause both the autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive types of the condition.
Who gets EDMD?
EDMD usually shows up at about 10 years of age. The most common form of EDMD only affects boys, but other forms affect both boys and girls. Heart problems are common in EDMD. A child with EDMD needs to be tested at least every year.

LGMD is a genetic disorder that is inherited as either an autosomal recessive or dominant trait. The autosomal recessive forms are estimated to account for 90 percent of cases.
