Why is planetarium Chicago closed?
The planetarium closed when the COVID-19 pandemic first arrived back in March of 2020. Whilst other museums and attractions have closed and reopened multiple times since then, the planetarium has stayed shut through to now.
Why is Adler planetarium closed?
Like many cultural institutions, the Adler faced significant challenges during the pandemic. While the city was shut down, we had to make the difficult decision to reduce our staff, and we are working to rehire and retrain positions across all museum departments in anticipation of fully reopening next spring.

Our family included a 4, 9, and 20 year old children. They all enjoyed the exhibits. There’s so much to do and see that 2-3 hours is probably a good time allotment. Plus, if you are a member of a science center in your area, you will get free admission.
When did the planetarium close?
The Planetarium is no longer open as it ceased operation in 2010. In its former space, we currently house the Marvel Universe 4D experience, which is a separately ticketed attraction. This experience utilises the iconic dome to create an immersive cinema experience.
