- Prepare your design in the software.
- Load Your Tool and Cutting Mat into the Machine.
- Adjust the Cut Settings.
- Do a Test Cut.

Is the silhouette portrait worth it?
All things considered, we would recommend the Silhouette Portrait 3 and think it’s a great little machine. It’s likely to suit you if you fall into any of the following categories: You want a smaller, cheaper machine than the Cameo 4 but with similar functionality and precision.
Does the silhouette portrait Print and cut?
All Silhouette machines are capable of using the Print & Cut feature. With Print & Cut, you can use your free Silhouette Studio® software to create a design (or use a Print & Cut design from the Silhouette Design Store) and print it out on your home printer.

You can look at all the technical differences on the Silhouette website, but the biggest difference is cutting width. The Cameo can cut up to 12″ wide and the Portrait can cut up to 8″. The Portrait cutting mat holds materials up to 9″ wide, which is perfect for 8.5×11 sheets of card stock or sticker paper.

You can only cut materials that have a backing without a mat on the Silhouette machines. Materials that have a backing would include adhesive vinyl or Heat Transfer vinyl (HTV), these are the most common ones I see.
