How long do torsion trailer axles last?
Subject: RE: Rubber Torsion Axle Life Expectancy? the lifespan is 15-20 years…. no matter how many miles towed or how stored (weight off frame, etc.)
Do trailer torsion axles wear out?
Helpful Expert Reply: It is certainly possible for any axle to wear out enough over time to need replacing. Since the suspension is built into a torsion axle if the suspension part was to wear out pretty much the only solution would be to replace the axle.
How do you measure a trailer torsion axle?
The best way is to measure from tip-of-spindle to tip-of-spindle and subtract 4-3/8″ and that will give you the hub face measurement on Dexter torsion axles. Another way is to measure the brake flanges outside to outside and add 6-3/4″ and that will give you the results.
Which is better spring or torsion axles?
Torsion trailer axles offer a smoother ride and less maintenance. Leaf springs are more durable, less expensive and far easier to replace parts on. Selecting the proper axle is as simple as determining your application, and figuring out the loads you need to carry.
How do I know what size trailer axle I need?
If you bought a company-made trailer (as opposed to building one yourself from a kit) there should be a tag with the VIN, weight and capacities all there for you. You should find it on the driver’s side of the trailer. A second way to determine the size axle you need is to measure the diameter of your existing axle.
Can you replace the rubber in a torsion axle?
Torsion axles use internal rubber cords to provide the suspension motion and they really are not practical to repair/rebuild. Certainly any axle that was damaged in an accident should be replaced purely for safety reasons.
Can you straighten torsion axles?
No. Unfortunately, unless the trailer is nearly new, it is recommended (or at least it was recommended to me) that you replace both axles. I am installing new axles for the same reason next week. No mine is a solid casting.
