Is Havana Club rum any good?
The Havana Club 7 is a good rum, well crafted, it doesn’t seem to have been messed with – it’s authentic Cuban rum. Unfortunately there is just something in its profile that I just don’t like. In the style I would go for Matusalem 15 or Bermudez Aniversario first but that is purely my preference.
Is Havana Club Especial good?
It’s very heavy with vanilla and the caramel and brown sugar notes are too much. The rum is quite smooth and not very rough. If you enjoy a sweet sip then you may be able to live with this. The oakiness and tobacco are notes are overwhelmed by the sweetness of the vanilla.

One of the dark rums smacked of butterscotch and had a faint salinity; the vanilla and wood notes from barrel aging were prominent in a way that the other dark rum seemed to express more subtly. In that other, I tasted caramel, vanilla, a subtle grassiness and some cinnamon — and it was the unanimous favorite.
