1944 – On 27 April the first patients are admitted to Hutt Hospital in ward 11, one of the four 50-bed wards in the Emergency Hospital. On May 15th Hutt Hospital is officially opened.

Why is the Hutt Valley called that?
Hutt Valley and the Hutt River were named in honour of Sir William Hutt, a New Zealand Company director. Ngāi Tara called the river Te Awakairangi – ‘the watercourse of greatest value’. It was navigable by canoe for some distance inland, providing access to a rich supply of food.

All of the Western Hill suburbs of Lower Hutt are nice (Kelson, Belmont, Harbour View, Normandale, Maungaraki, Korokoro and especially Tirohanga) and are all very much perfectly safe and relaxed areas. I’d highly recommend Maungaraki, it is pretty fantastic!

It is believed Tangi-te-keo, (Mt Victoria) was named after the soul of Whātaitai, which, after leaving the taniwha’s body, flew up to the top of this hill in the shape of a bird and proceeded to tangi (weep and mourn). From this spot one can also see Matiu (Somes) Island and Makaro (Ward) Island.
