Get an EQDirect cable from Shoestring Astronomy and connect directly from the computer to the mount, bypassing the hand controller. This is the most reliable connection. You also want to have the ASCOM platform installed, and running EQAscom (commonly referred to as EQMod).
What is the difference between EQ5 and HEQ5?
The HEQ5 will support much more weight than the EQ5, so the whole setup will be much more stable. A single axis motor drives only the right ascension axis, and a dual axis motor controls both right ascension & declination.
