Is 3 pin XLR same as DMX?
Though DMX cables and XLR cables are often both three-pin cables and look the same, they should not be used interchangeably, especially along longer cable runs. DMX cables and XLR cables are engineered to handle different types of information at different impedance.
Can you splice DMX cable?
DMX cable works from point to point, and what’s more, requires each one of those points to be terminated properly as “in” and “out”. You cannot splice DMX wires together to continue a DMX run. They should be properly terminated and grounded.
Does DMX need ground?
It is important to only earth one end of the bus to avoid ground loops. DMX-512 optionally does allow the line conductors at the transmitter to be referenced to the ground level, but then requires that the total resistance to ground is less than 20 Ohms.
Can you use regular XLR for DMX?
Yes, it is possible (but not advised) to use XLR cables for DMX connections. DMX has a higher impedance (110 ohms) than XLR (75 ohms). This means that XLR uses different signals than DMX is built to handle. An XLR cable can transmit a DMX signal, but not very well.
Can you daisy chain DMX cable?
Every DMX fixture has an input and an output, allowing you to daisy-chain your DMX cable from one light to the next. Just make sure to give each fixture a discrete DMX address for individual control.

Take a look at the photos, when the tester is connected to a DMX output but with no data being sent, only the green LED is turned on. At the very moment the DMX signal is being sent, both of the LEDs will shine.
What are the different DMX header positions?
Note: some ETC products use a single 8-position header for both DMX IN and DMX THRU. In that case, the first three positions are used for DMX IN and use white / brown, orange, and white / orange; the next three positions are used for DMX OUT on a different cable, and again use white / brown, orange, and white / orange.
How to connect LED light bulbs to a DMX source?
