How long does it take to go through the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum?
Please note that the trip takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes each way, and that visitors spend an average 2-4 hours at the Udvar-Hazy Center. We recommend planning a whole day for each location.
Why is the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum closed?
The museum has been undergoing a major renovation since late 2018. This closure is needed to ensure the continued safety of visitors. To provide the best visitor experience, the museum’s west-end galleries will open all at one time; their opening date will be announced next year.

As of March 11, masks are not required to visit Smithsonian museums or the National Zoo. While it will not be required, all visitors who feel more comfortable wearing a face mask during their visit are encouraged to do so. Visitors are not required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination to enter the museum.
Can you bring water into Air and Space Museum?
We encourage you to schedule extra time in your visit. Please don’t bring prohibited items into the Museum. Tripods, selfie-sticks, knives (including pocket knives), scissors, most food and drinks, aerosol cans, and other prohibited objects just don’t fly here. Bring water — it’s allowed in the Museum.
Can I bring a water bottle to the Smithsonian?
We allow backpacks in our museum. Visitors are permitted to bring food and beverages in sealed containers inside a backpack or other bag. Food and beverages may not be consumed in the museum.
Is the National Air and Space Museum free?
HI – The National Air and Space Museum, like all the other Smithsonian Museums are free entry – this even includes the excellent Smithsonian Zoo. In some of the museums, there will be special exhibitions that have an entry charge – but all the main attractions are free.
