What does burned skin look like when healing?
After a burn injury, the area of burned skin may appear red and inflamed. This redness gradually decreases and fades as the skin matures. It generally takes skin 12–18 months to finish healing and for skin to fade to a near-normal color.
Does burn discoloration go away?
Discoloration varies with each individual, depending on your natural skin coloring. Natural color may return to superficial burns and some second-degree burns in several months. Other areas may take much longer and some discoloration may be permanent in burns of greater depth.
How long does it take for skin pigmentation to come back after a burn?
Burn-injured skin heals in one to three years if scar tissue develops. Pressure garments and plastic orthoses may shorten the healing time. If thick scars do not form, healing is complete when the pink color fades (6–12 months).
Why is my skin white after a burn?
Second-degree burns (partial thickness burns) affect the epidermis and the dermis (lower layer of skin). They cause pain, redness, swelling, and blistering. Third-degree burns (full thickness burns) go through the dermis and affect deeper tissues. They result in white or blackened, charred skin that may be numb.
How do you tell if a burn is healing correctly?
Monitor your healing. It may be difficult to tell when a burn has healed because it will have a different coloration from your regular skin, but healed skin will look dry. The exception is full-thickness burns, which will appear dry from the start.

Why is my skin dark after a burn?
Why Skin Color Is Affected by a Burn. When you suffer a second-degree (or partial thickness) burn, you lose the outer most layer of skin, or epidermis. Since melanin, which gives skin the brown or black pigment that defines skin color, exists in the epidermis, that pigment has also been lost.
Do burns turn white while healing?
Third-degree and more severe burns (also called full thickness burns) damage both layers of the skin and may also damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons. Injured skin may turn white, black, and/or gray. It may feel dry and leathery.
Does skin color return after burn?
With a burn injury, that pigment is lost. With healing, the pigment may return, but this process is unpredictable. Often, newly healed skin appears pink and unpigmented. As the scar matures, the skin may regain pigment.

What does a healing wound look like?
This helps to repair the skin and tissues in the wound. Collagen is like a scaffold that other cells can be built on. At this stage in healing, you might see a fresh, raised, red scar. The scar will slowly fade in color and look flatter.
