Is Education Austin a union?
Education Austin is the labor union for certified and classified employees of the Austin Independent School District. Created in 1999 from the merger of the NEA-affiliated Austin Association of Teachers (AAT) and the AFT-affiliated Austin Federation of Teachers/Allied Education Workers (AFT/AEW).

In 1980, two fledgling groups dedicated to the advancement of public education and educators in Texas merged to form the Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE).

Why doesn’t Texas have a teachers union?
We are a union. Texas’ status as a “right-to-work” state means union membership isn’t compulsory — not illegal. That said, Texas is one of only a handful of states that denies collective bargaining to public employees. So our employment contracts generally are dictated to us by our local school boards.

Texas is a “right-to-work” state, or as we like to call it, a “right-to-work-for-less” state. Unions aren’t banned in “right-to-work” states. (That’s illegal.) But union membership cannot be compulsory for employment.
