What is the difference between a hedgehog and a tenrec?
Tenrecs have a long, narrow snout that almost looks rat-like. If it weren’t for the quills and barely visible tail, one might mistake tenrecs for a rat at a distance. Pet hedgehogs have skinny legs like a tenrec. However, they have four toes on the front paws and five toes on the back paws.
Does temperature affect hibernation?
Hibernating species are being affected by warming temperatures to the extent that some species are spending less time hibernating by delaying the onset of hibernation or emerging earlier; being abnormally active can force them to use stored energy before they can replace it.
Are Tenrecs rodents?
Shrew Tenrecs are not often encountered and when they are may be misidentified as rodents rather than tenrecs. The genus Microgale is commonly called Shrew Tenrecs….Mammals of Andasibe Part 2 of 2 – Tenrecs, Bats, and Rodents.

Can you keep a tenrec as a pet?
Tenrecs are not overly friendly pets. They don’t necessarily mind being handled, but they don’t crave human attention like many more-aptly-called “pets” do. If they’re handled gently and regularly as pups, they’re more likely to respond well to human interaction.
Can humans hibernate?
Humans don’t hibernate for two reasons. Firstly, our evolutionary ancestors were tropical animals with no history of hibernating: humans have only migrated into temperate and sub-arctic latitudes in the last hundred thousand years or so.
Can humans Estivate?
Similarly to the way human hibernate during the winter, estivate can refer to the action of spending the summer in one place, eschewing any travel. At the same time, I find myself sympathetic; we are all dreading the heat that we can feel gathering itself, about to crash down in a week or so.

Do tenrecs need UV?
If your tenrec doesn’t get much natural sunlight often, then you can also provide your tenrec with a tube UVB bulb to help with their calcium absorption. The D3 in the calcium powder needs UVB to be activated.

Can humans be made to hibernate?
Firstly, our evolutionary ancestors were tropical animals with no history of hibernating: humans have only migrated into temperate and sub-arctic latitudes in the last hundred thousand years or so. That’s not quite long enough to evolve all the metabolic adaptations we would need to be able to hibernate.
