Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses the body’s natural magnetic properties to produce detailed images from any part of the body. For imaging purposes the hydrogen nucleus (a single proton) is used because of its abundance in water and fat.

MRIs employ powerful magnets which produce a strong magnetic field that forces protons in the body to align with that field. When a radiofrequency current is then pulsed through the patient, the protons are stimulated, and spin out of equilibrium, straining against the pull of the magnetic field.

Objects that may interfere with image quality if close to the area being scanned include:
- Metallic spinal rod.
- Plates, pins, screws, or metal mesh used to repair a bone or joint.
- Joint replacement or prosthesis.
- Metallic jewelry including those used for body piercing or body modification.
Can you wear AirPods in MRI?
This is normal. You should be offered earplugs and/or headphones to make the noise sound less loud. You may also be able to listen to music through the headphones to make the MRI exam more enjoyable.
How does MRI use electromagnetic waves?

Radio waves are then sent from the MRI machine and move these atoms out of the original position. Which one is not a contraindication of MRI?
MRI Contraindications Patients who have a heart pacemaker may not have an MRI scan. Patients who have a metallic foreign body (metal sliver) in their eye, or who have an aneurysm clip in their brain, cannot have an MRI scan since the magnetic field may dislodge the metal.
Can you wear bra in MRI?
For women, if possible, do not wear an underwire bra (the metal can throw off the magnetic field). Sports bras are usually good and we have hospital gowns to change into if necessary. The clasps on the back of a regular bra are not a problem, but avoid wearing bras that have metal parts on the straps.
