Why do Altras have velcro?
They are to keep those highly annoying little pieces of plant debris and rocks out of your socks and shoes when you run trails. I use them on every run. If you don’t have Altra shoes, clean the back of your shoe with a little rubbing alcohol and stick a velcro tab about halfway up.

The strapless design works on any trail shoe but is perfect when paired up with an Altra GaiterTrap equipped shoe. And the strapless design allows you to change your shoes and socks without ever removing the gaiter.
Are Altra gaiters any good?
The bottom of the gaiter is very close to the top of the shoe, and not very snug, so it doesn’t protect well. I’m a shoe size 11.5 mens, wearing size L gaiter. Great for keeping the trail on the outside of your shoes. The quality of these gaiters is good. They fit the Altra shoes perfectly.
What do you think about the gaiter trap on Lone peaks?
The “gaiter trap” is, in my opinion, over-designed. There are loops on the side of the shoe for other gaiters, and there is a hook at the bottom of the laces, but the velcro is unnecessarily cumbersome. Plus the velcro would wear down in no time; while fine for a replaceable gaiter, I wouldn’t want the velcro on my Lone Peaks to come undone.
What gaiters do you use on the PCT?
I’ve gone both ways with/without gaiters on the PCT and AT, using knee length, heavy duty, gortex OR gaiters, with mixed results. I prefer the light weight Altra gaiters. The good: the material is nice, good stretch and breathability, compatible with Lone Peaks.
