In 1994, the museum opened the Pump House People’s History Museum containing a public gallery at the present site on Bridge Street. The two sites were renamed the People’s History Museum (PHM) in 2001. The Bridge Street site closed for a £12.5m redevelopment in October 2007.

Who built Manchester Museum?
By the 1860s the Natural History Society had little money and the building was full. The museum was transferred in 1868 to Owens College, which later became the University of Manchester.
