How long are White Labs Yeast good for?
four months
The shelf life for White Labs Yeast is four months. Yeast used after this point is usually fine, but lag times will be longer. There will be living yeast in most vials for 6-12 months, so if a starter is made to activate the yeast, successful fermentations can be carried out with aged yeast.
How many yeast cells are in a white lab?
White Labs recommends using one fresh liquid yeast package to ferment an up to 1.050 original gravity 5-gallon batch of homebrew. White Labs states their packaging is made to contain 100 Billion cells and notes the range is 60 to 120 Billion cells per package.
What is PurePitch?
A professional-sized modular design to pitch 5 HL of standard beer at a rate of 7.5 million cells/mL. No matter the strain, PurePitch® Next Generation gives customers a consistent cell count to more accurately pitch for a foolproof fermentation.
Does liquid yeast need a starter?
Preparing Liquid Yeast Liquid yeast usually must be pitched to a starter wort before pitching to the main wort in the fermenter. Using a starter gives yeast a head start and increases the population preventing weak fermentations due to under-pitching. But a starter is not always necessary.
How many yeast cells do I need?
How much yeast do I need? Simply multiply the number of gravity points by the multiplier you selected above, and then multiply by your batch size in gallons. (0.007 packs per gallon per gravity point) × (50 gravity points) × (5 gallons) = 1.75 liquid yeast packs.
How many cells are in white lab pure pitch?
Re: White labs pitch rate? You need about 850 billion cells for a proper pitch. That’s 45.4 liters x 1.5 billion cells per liter multiplied by 12.5 degrees Plato(1.050).
How long is too long for a yeast starter?
You can pitch the starter within 12-18 hours, but you can’t decant the liquid. I think you’ll be fine, just chill the yeast until you are ready to brew. I’ve made starters a week out, to no ill effects. Just chill them in the fridge after 36-48 hours, like Pinski said.
Is a yeast starter worth it?
I’m of the opinon that almost every beer should get a starter, but definitely anything above that should either get a starter, or be pitched with two packets of yeast. In the end, you’re going to save yourself a lot of money by making starters and not spending an extra 6-plus bucks every time you brew a big beer.

- Shake intermittently or put it on a stir plate for 24-48 hours.
What happens if you add too much yeast to wort?
If you over-pitch, or dump in too much yeast, your squadron of cells might over-accomplish its mission, thereby fermenting too fast and stripping the beer of much of its desired character. If you’re aiming for esters and other complexities that arise during fermentation, you might not get them.
Can you add too much yeast to wort?
Probably not, unless it’s like two pounds of dry yeast into a pint of wort. It would just make a mess. In reality, I pitch a little less than normal if it’s a small beer or if I want more flavor expression. A little more than normal if it’s a bigger beer or I want a cleaner lower level of flavor expression.
Should you decant a starter?
To avoid potential issues, you can decant the starter into another container before pitching. Decanting is easy to do. When your yeast starter is finished fermenting, pop it in the fridge overnight and let the yeast settle to the bottom.
Do you pitch the whole yeast starter?
I do the traditional decant. I’m going to start to add spent yeast to the boil of the starter as a source of nutrients particularly zinc rather than to the wort to take advantage of my practice of decanting. Actually, traditional is pitching the whole thing.
Can I save my yeast starter?
You can keep it in the fridge for a week or two, but after that you should make a new starter, and wake them up again. You can pitch the starter within 12-18 hours, but you can’t decant the liquid.
